UTTAREY
Situated in the west district of Sikkim, you can reach Uttarey from Pelling, Geyzing or Dentam. On your way you will pass Singshore Bridge, said to be the second highest bridge in Asia. The height of Uttarey is about 6600ft.
Uttarey is famous for its tranquillity and natural beauty. The place provides beautiful view to the Himalayan Mountains and is yet relatively less travelled by tourists. This allows a more serene atmosphere to be enjoyed. During winter the mountains around here are covered with snow allowing heavenly views.
The Kagyud Gumpa (Gumpa is the local for monastery) in Uttarey is a highly revered place of worship for the locals and a good place for sight seeing. The monastery is set amidst dense forests. The wall paintings in the monastery might be of interest to you. The Dentam peak and the river are also visible from the monastery.
Other important tourist spots around Uttarey include the Mainbas Waterfall and the Chiwabhanzyang Pass. This pass is about 10 km of Uttarey and is the gateway to Nepal.

Tenzing Hillary Park and Lameney Pokhari
At the altitude of 8100 ft, 15 minutes of drive and 45 minutes of footpath walking distance from Uttarey, there is a small but beautiful holy lake and a beautiful tourist view point called – “LAMENEY POKHARI” around which a mind blowing and entertaining “TENZINNG- HILLARY PARK” to be constructed is being proposed by the local people to the Government and the work also has been under process.
A majestic view of sunrise and a snow clad mountain ranges of Nathula and Jelepla Pass in the East and some part of Kanchendzonga Range in the North can be enjoyed from this beautiful view point during the clear weather days.
Lameney Pokhari View Point falls in the border boundary of Barsey Rhododendron and Wild Life Sanctuary. There are plenty of wild animals like Ghoral, Deer, Bucks, Wild Boars, Hisped hare, Kalej Peasants, Red Panda and Wild Bear etc.
This place and around is really a very famous and rich in medicinal herbal plants as one big Departmental Herbal Nursery is there at “Tertchey Patal” planting, producing and supplying different types of herbal medicines. The local people normally make their treatment by using these natural and organic herbal medicinal plants.
Lameney Pokhari and around is dominated by the Sherpa tribal community. There are still some Sherpa old porters who had served Tenzing Sherpa during his expedition and while passing through Indo-Nepal border Chiwabhanzyang Pass.
Trout Rearing Farm
In the distance of 1km from UTTAREY TROUT (FISH OF THE SALMON FAMILY) HATCHERY CENTRE at Simphok has been established by the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Sikkim for rearing, breeding, marketing and distribution to the public to meet their livelihood in the field of fisheries. Kagyud Monastery and Maneybong Thegu Mangheem
About 10 to 15 minutes of walk from Uttarey valley, there is a beautiful hill top view point called as Gumpa Dara as well as Mangheem Thegu, where one Kagyud Monastery and one Yuma Mangheem are constructed for worshipping and meditations?
We can have the panoramic view of Singalila Range –Phoktey Dara, Cheewa Fangzong La Pass in the West, Ravangla, Phadamchen and the range of Nathula Pass in the East, Neydham (Dichenphu) Dara in the North and Barsey Rhododendron and Wild Life Sanctuary in the South.
Around the Yuma Mangheem Thegu and the Monastery we find ample of ruined Maaney Stone Relics written in Tibetan scripts. It is believed that the Second King of Sikkim - Tensung Namgyal married the princes Hangwa Mukma daughter of Yoyo Hang , the Limboo King of Arun-Tambar in Nepal, had this the worshipping as well as halting place for their entourage walk to Nepal from Sikkim during 18th century through this valley
Singshore Suspension Bridge (Asian 2nd highest)
With a span of 198 m and 220 m in depth, located in the mid-way to Uttarey from Dentam, “SINGSHORE BRIDGE” is the SECOND HIGHEST SUSPENSION BRIDGE IN ASIA, and the first of its kind in Sikkim as well as in the country India, which have been a unique and a new tourist destination
Changey Twin Falls
Changey Waterfall looks pretty much like a white line, emerging from dense greenery falling from a height of 300 m. In fact, this piece of nature comes with a topping of cheese. Cheese lovers must not miss the cheese factory located in the nearby Dentam Village.
Chayatal
Main attraction of Chayatal is Chaya Lake, name of the place based on this lake with emerald green water, heaven for nature lover. Sikkim state government has taken few initiatives to promote tourism, Chayatal Lake constructed near He-Bermiok to develop Eco-Tourism in West Sikkim. Get a superb view of snow-capped Mt. Kanchenjunga, Kabru and many other peaks.
Alpine Cheese Plant, Dentam
Dentam is a scenic village which is located nearly 10 kilometres from Uttarey in West Sikkim District. It lies at an elevation of around 1500 metres. The word Dentam derives from the word 'Ten-Nem', which literally means a flat terraced land in the limboo language. It is located in a very unique topography. Dentam commands a constant view of the Mt. Khangchendzonga. The entire area is surrounded by forest of rhododendrons. The village is an ideal spot for bird watchers and nature lovers. Trekking and mountaineering are arranged here. It is famous for the Alpine Gouda Cheese factory a product of Indo - Swiss collaboration. Sikkim Dairy Products Private Limited (SDPPL) and was established in 1996. Cheese Plant at Dentam, West Sikkim, manufactures Gouda Cheese (naturally ripened cheese) and is one of the tourist attractions. Quality cow's milk is used under hygienic environment to produce Cheese and Paneer (Frozen Diced Paneer). Pemayangtse Monastery (10 km), Ravangla (69 km) and Hilley are nearby interesting destinations to visit.
Sirijunga Mangheem
Mangshila - Constructed in 1983, its designs are similar to that of Sirijunga Yuma Mangheem – Martam (West Sikkim). During January, Maghey Sankranti is celebrated with enthusiasm and people of all communities from neighbourhood hamlets come and partake in the celebrations. In recent year the festivity has gained so much popularity that people travel for hours to witness the cultural extravaganza organized over.
Mianbas hidden Falls and Sainopool
This is a beautiful waterfall near Uttarey that can be visited on foot. The water fall is about 7 kms from Uttarey town. You have to travel through the west bound road from Uttarey which leads to the trout farm. From here another 5 kms walk through the forested trail will take you to Mainbass Falls. Camping near the waterfall is also possible.

Chittrey – Chiwabhanzyang
Like Donkyela Pass, Nathula Pass, Chorten Nimala pass and Jelepla pass in the Indo-China border, Chiwabhanzyang Pass is also one of the important and popular pass in the Indo-Nepal border. The name Chiwabhanzyang is taken from the old name Cheewa-Fangzong which means “PEEPING VALLEY” in the local Limboo language. It lies in the Indo-Nepal border pass, a famous trade route connecting many villages of remote and extreme Western part of Sikkim in India with the remote and extreme eastern part of Nepal.
Sopakha – Charantar (Limboo village)
Facing towards the east with a gentle slope, 3 km walking distance from Uttarey, dominated by the Limboo community there lays a beautiful village called Sopakha. On top of the village there is a next beautiful flat land view point called Charantar where from majestic view of entire Kalej Valley as well as most of the mountain villages of West Sikkim can be enjoyed with special bird eye view of Uttarey Lake and villages around. The place falls within the Kanchendzonga Biosphere – Zone with a rich biodiversities.

Typical local traditional musical instrument like BINAYO and TONGNA are made in this village. The village people use to enjoy with these unique instruments dancing and singing mostly during the evening time relaxing all the tiredness of working throughout the day.
